Covering walls with a fresh coat of paint not only spruces up a home's decor, but it can also solve a lot of issues. Here are some tips on using paint to address several challenges you might come across when renovating.
Dim Rooms
If you have a room that doesn't receive enough natural daylight — whether it's south-facing or has small windows — it can feel dreary and dim. The right wall paint, though, can reverse this effect. A mid-toned hue, such as a vibrant green, for instance, will enliven the space. On the other hand, a pale shade, such as pastel yellow, will simply fade to grey if starved of light to bring out its subtle pigments; thus, such walls will simply look greyish.
At the other extreme, hues like dark maroon or navy will contract the room dimensions. A mid-tone avoids both of these problems. With enough richness of colour not to grey out in a dark room, a medium shade can hold its own. It's also not so dark that it creates a claustrophobic feel.
Long Spaces
A room in your home might form a long, narrow space — it could be a living room, hallway or any other room. The right wall and ceiling colours can balance its proportions. Deep shades feel closer than light ones. Thus, painting the end walls several shades darker than the side ones will visually draw them closer. As a result, the space will feel more square and evenly proportioned.
You can use a similar tactic on a ceiling to visually pull it downwards. A high ceiling in a narrow hallway, as an example, can exaggerate the narrowness of the area. To disrupt this rectangularity, paint the ceiling several shades darker so that the corridor will seem squarer and thus less narrow.
Uneven Walls
Rather than dim rooms or oddly shaped ones, your home might have rough and pitted walls. Paint can come to the rescue in these instances as well. So long as the surface doesn't have significant damage, repair work can even out the walls. Then, cover them with a flat paint to further minimise flaws. Your enemy in these situations is sheen and shine, which will highlight any rough patches. Alternatively, decorative residential painting techniques can camouflage imperfections. Using tools such as sponges, brushes and other devices, contractors can create a limitless array of textures, either more subtle or overt depending on your preferences.
